Why do people in business, celebrities, politicians and generally High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) require private security? What is the concern? Are they not as safe as ordinary citizens?
The cold answer is No. This is true just as much for India as any other place in the world, and it is well understood that the world runs on envy and compromise, a simple truth based on human nature. Rich people face threats to their safety and well-being to a higher degree than regular people who would, in everyday life, not require executive protection. It is easy to understand why rich people are more attractive targets for criminals. Their travel schedules, public display of wealth and even their lifestyles will expose them to potential accidents and attacks. Even those who think that no public display is a clever approach will be at risk internally.
One common threat zone is the workplace. Almost everyone has entertained the thought of seeking revenge against a wealthy employer for silly and sometimes justifiable reasons. The triggers can be multifold, and often that thought is discarded. However, it is not unimaginable to think that there would be specific individuals capable enough to attempt it. It would be against such individuals where visual deterrence in the form of a PSO (Personal Security Officer) comes as the first line of defence. Then comes their training and tacts, including weapons to de-escalate any clear and present threat to their protectee.
Therefore, a VIP and VVIP in the security industry is generally not someone who is recognized by their ability to cut in line and travel with a red beacon over their vehicle. The right connections and a little money will get you all these privileges. A VIP Protectee would be recognized based on their threat perception, which will almost always be related to their personal wealth or public work.
