At 95, K. Natwar Singh’s passing feels like the closing chapter of a great epic, a story woven with the threads of history, diplomacy, and deep personal connections. The man who once walked the world stage with the gravitas of a seasoned diplomat has left behind an emptiness that resonates deeply with those who knew him and those who were touched by his legacy.

Born into the regal splendor of Bharatpur, Rajasthan, in 1931, Natwar Singh was destined for greatness. From an early age, his life was imbued with the values of honor and duty, traits that would carry him through a career as illustrious as it was challenging. He entered the Indian Foreign Service in 1953, stepping into a world that was still reeling from the aftermath of World War II and the dawn of the Cold War. Amidst the shifting alliances and high-stakes negotiations, Natwar Singh proved himself to be a man of remarkable intellect and unshakeable resolve. His work during the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1983, among other diplomatic missions, underscored his role as a key architect of India’s foreign policy during some of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th century.

Yet, it was not just his public life that defined him, but the deeply human connections he forged along the way. My own journey intersected with his through the legacy of my grandfather, Dr. I.P. Singh, whose paths often crossed with Natwar’s during their foreign service days. These connections were not just professional — they were deeply personal. As I embarked on writing A Man Among Princes, the biography of Maharaja Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo, Natwar Singh’s support became a lifeline. His home, a sanctuary filled with history and knowledge, became a second home to me and my then-girlfriend, Razia.

In those rooms lined with books, amidst the soft light of late afternoon, we listened to Natwar Singh recount stories that spanned continents and eras. He spoke of his diplomatic encounters with a gravity that made the past come alive. His wife, Princess Heminder Kaur of Patiala, welcomed us like family, and Natwar’s razor-sharp humor and profound wisdom created an atmosphere of warmth and trust. He would sign his books for us, each inscription carrying a weight of history and personal connection. His blessings for me and Razia as a couple were heartfelt, though fate had different plans for our relationship. Even so, the kindness he showed us is a memory that remains vivid and cherished.

Natwar Singh’s love for literature was the true testament to his character. His personal library, a collection of over 10,000 books, was more than just a repository of knowledge — it was a reflection of his insatiable curiosity and his deep understanding of the human condition. He read not just with the eyes of a scholar, but with the heart of a poet, finding solace and inspiration in the pages of great works. This love for the written word is a legacy he imparted to many, including myself. His encouragement of young authors was a gift, a way of nurturing the next generation of thinkers and writers. It is a tradition I now carry forward, hoping to pass on the same inspiration and support he so generously offered.

As we look back on his life, we see a man who was not only a diplomat and politician, but also a mentor, a storyteller, and a friend. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy — rich with the stories he lived and the history he shaped — will continue to inspire. His journey was marked by triumphs and trials, by moments of profound insight and deep personal loss. Yet through it all, he remained a figure of grace and dignity, navigating the complexities of life with a steadfast heart.

In his final years, as the world he had once moved so confidently in began to fade, Natwar Singh’s connection to the written word remained his anchor. It was through his books, his letters, and his stories that he continued to touch lives, even as his own drew to a close. Today, as we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we do so with a sense of profound gratitude for all that he gave us — his wisdom, his stories, and his unwavering support. His life was a grand narrative, one that will be told and retold, each telling revealing new facets of a life lived with courage, intellect, and an abiding love for the world around him.

K. Natwar Singh’s story is not just his own — it is part of the larger fabric of the world he helped shape. And as we reflect on his life, we are reminded that the true measure of a person is not just in their accomplishments, but in the lives they touch along the way. His legacy will live on in the books he wrote, the policies he shaped, and the countless lives he inspired.
